Non-confined feeding and keeping methods using identification systems are an alternative to the hitherto individual keeping of sows. The main field for introduction should be the non-farrowing house and possibly the service center. A beneficial use in the farrowing and rearing sections has still to come. Controlled individual feeding seems meaningsful in gilt rearing and in pig fattening, but fails because of high costs. Only about 0,4 % of the around 150.000 farms with breedings sows in the Federal Republic use such a system. There are at present 30 producers of responder feeding systems with at least four different electronic identification systems and also several transreceiver systems.
