The effect of substituting coconut oil meal by soybean curd sludge in rations for growing young bulls

A feeding trial on substituting of coconut oil meal by soybean curd sludge in rations has been conducted in growing young bulls. This feeding trial used twelve growing young bulls with an average liveweight of 127 +- 36 kg. Based on the liveweight, the animals were divided into three groups, four animals per group. The rations that were given consisted of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and concentrates. Four levels of soybean curd sludge were used to substitute 32 percent (R0), 24 percent (R1), 14 percent (R2) and 0 percent (R3) coconut oil meal in concentrate formulations based on "equi-protein". Substituting coconut oil meal by soybean curd sludge did not show significant effects on dry matter, crude protein, ADF, NDF and energy consumption (P 0.05); but significant effects were found on crude protein and energy coefficient of digestion and feed conversion (P 0.05). Other effects of the substitution were faster growth rate and more economical ration utilization.
