Effects of growth hormone and medium temperature on the growth of stem cuttings of some citrus varieties

Stem cuttings of 5 citrus varieties: Sour orange, Citrus hystrix, Citron, Japanese citroen (JC) and Rough lemon (RL), were subjected to 2 rootone (growth substance) treatments, viz, with or without dipping in rootone solution, and then planted in growing media (a mixture of soil, manure and sand, 1 : 1 : 1), either under green house temperature (23 deg C) or in hotbeds with sustained temperature of 32 deg C. Experiments were conducted in Segunung (alt. 1,100 m), West Java (Indonesia). Results showed that, in general, for all varieties rooting and bud initiation were not significantly affected by rootone and hotbed treatments. Citron and JC cuttings produced significantly better shoots and roots than other varieties. Rootone tended to increase, whereas hotbeds tended to decrease root weights. For sour orange and C. hystrix, room temperature without rootone tended to enhance bud initiation, but rootone and hotbed application tend to stimulate the rooting of Sour orange cuttings. High temperature only tended to promote bud initiation and rooting of JC cuttings, however, rootone tended to increase root weight. For RL cuttings, combined rootone and hotbed application tended to promote rooting and bud initiation.
