The water distribution of three Iraqi soils was studied in packed columns in the laboratory in which careful considerations were given to water content and flux measurements. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention relationships to water content were obtained. The result showed a large variability in conductivity and retention among the different soils. Van Genuchten and Brooks and Corey models yielded a reasonable estimation of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Van Genuchten model required less input parameters in comparison to Brooks and Cory model. Our sensitivity tests suggested that pressure head at air entry value and saturated hydraulic conductivity are most sensitive parameters in the simulation. The method presented in this paper provided reliable estimates of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity for many field purposes if the boundary conditions are well defined
