The effect of soil moisture content and duration on the growth and yield of cotton

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of soil moisture content and duration on growth and yield of cotton, in Malang (East Java, Indonesia). Cotton seedlings were subjected to 3 soil moisture contents, i.e., 100; 75 and 50 percent of field capacity, and to 5 duration levels (days the pots were maintained at original moisture level), i.e., 60; 80; 100; 120 and 140 days (from the commencement of planting). Results showed that increasing both soil moisture content and duration did improve fibre yield, hence, maximum yield was obtained at 100 percent soil moisture for 140 days. Conversely, the lowest yield was obtained at 50 percent soil moisture for 60 days. Fibre quality was not affected by soil moisture content, but by its duration. Best fibre quality was obtained when soil was kept moist for 140 days, although this was not significantly different from the 120 days treatment.
