Effect of pyrophosphate addition with P-fertilizer on phosphorus uptake and corn growth

To investigate the effect of the addition of small amount of sodium pyrophosphate with P-fertilizer on the availability of phosphorous and P-uptake from different soils, three soil samples were chosen. The soils vary in their chemical and physical properties. A factorial completely randomized pot experiment was conducted using three levels of phosphorous from superphosphate and four levels of pyrophosphate with four replications. Corn plants (zea mays L.) were used as plant indicator. After sixty days, plants were harvested, dried and weighed. P-uptake as well as availabe-P were measured. Results indicated that the addition of 2 % pyrophosphate caused a significant increase in total dry matter of plant, P-uptake as well as soil available-P. No significant effect was observed for higher levels of pyrophosphate addition. It was concluded that the addition of 2 % of pyrophosphate to the P-fertilizer, increased the efficiency of plants uptake for this nutrient
