The effects of intercropping of vegetables and corn on the yield and pest incidence in soybean

Cabbage, tomato and corn were intercropped with soybean at three row spacings, i.e., 100, 150 and 200 cm. Soybean as main crop was planted between the intercropped plant at 25 x 25 spacing, and yield as well as frequency of pest attack were compared with those of the monoculture of either soybean, cabbage, tomato or corn. Cropping systems were treated with or without insecticide sprays. Results showed that insecticide sprays increased dry weight of soybean plant, pod number, seed number and seed weight per plant. Insecticide spraying significantly reduced the percentage of soybean plants attacked by beanfly, and the percentage of leaf damage. Intercropping did not significantly affect percentages of leaf and pod damage. Neither cabbage nor tomato intercrop did affect soybean plant yield, but this was affected by corn intercrop. The closer the corn spacing, the smaller the soybean yield. Intercropping reduced the crown diameter, leaf number and dry weight of cabbage. Intercropped tomato grew taller than those of the monoculture, but intercropping reduced its plant dry and fruit weight, due to light competition.
