The experiment was designed to evaluate the effect of using chip buds and of rootstock age on growth rate of scion of "Keprok Batu 55" sweet orange (Citrus nobilis Lour. var. chrysocarpa Hassk.). Budding was carried out in Tlekung (East Java, Indonesia; air temperature 25-30 deg C.; RH more than 70 percent), in which chip buds and common buds of "Keprok Batu 55" sweet orange were grafted on Japanese citroen (JC) seedlings (as rootstocks) of 20, 28 and 36 weeks old. Results indicated that bud eyes propagated through chip budding tended to break earlier. Chip budding on the young seedlings (20 weeks old) gave satisfactory growth of scions. There were no significant differences in shoot height, number of leaves and shoot diameter produced by chip budding or by common budding, if grafted on older seedlings. It was more difficult to practise common budding on very young seedlings, by using containers however, this method might be enhanced. Therefore, by applying this method citrus nursery trees could be produced within less than one year.
