Investigations on the breeding site preference of mosquitoes in Ekpoma, Nigeria

The relative distribution of mosquito larvae in 3 macrohabitats (forest, rock outcrop and grassland) and three microhabitats (bamboo cups, snail shells and house-hold cans) was studied between January and June, 1986. The investigation revealed that the genus Eretampodites had a marked preference for snail shells in forest and grassland macrohabitats. The genus Anopheles tends to avoid containers as breeding sites and was only recorded from bamboo cups in the rock outcrop area. Similarly, Culex mosquito also tend avoid snail shells, but high numbers of the larvae were found in bamboo cups and cans. Aedes mosquitoes were found to breed in all types of containers and in all macrohabitats. Numbers of Aedes larvae (1760) encountered represented 62 per cent of all larvae. These differences were shown to be statistically significant by the Student T-test p less than or equal to 0.05) - i.e. there ist a significant difference in the distribution of mosquito larvae both in the macrohabitats and in the containers. The significance of the findings are discussed with respect to public health
