Aim for this research is making more comprehensive statements on the many-sided effects of herbicide- and insecticide-free crop edges (as defined by Greaves and Marshall 1987). In addition to this the 'Botanical Faunistic Working Group' led through a subject-overlapping research in three different locations in Hesse (FRG). This first article presents the conception of the project and the botanical number of species of weeds in the unsprayed crop edges was - partially distinct - higher than it was in the remaining field.
