Germplasm sources from the international stock and their utilization in early summer and autumn tomatoes breeding

During the 1982-1986 period 599 germplasm sources of early and summer and autumn tomatoes, from 24 countries have been studied in the collection of the Research Institute for Vegetable and Flower Growing "Vidra". The main purpose of this study was: conservation of the whole genetic variability of the species and cultivars belonging to the genus Lycopersicon; the utilization in the breeding process of the most valuable cultivars and hybrids (with respect to high yielding ability, earliness, quality, resistance to disease, a.s.o.). The hybridizations and genealogic selection applied on the Romanian and foreign biologic material led to recombinations, that showed valuable characters in the selection fields. These recombinations have been used as genitors for the creation of F1 early tomato hybrids, or as stable lines for the future cultivation of fresh market, summer and autumn tomatoes
