Intravaginal sponge insertion technique
1988
Scudamore, C.L. (Rowett Res. Serv., Bucksburn, Aberdeen (UK))
Seventeen mature Bleu du Maine ewes submitted for embryo transfer had had intravaginal sponges impregnated with fluorogestone acetate inserted 12 days earlier. When the sponges were removed 8 ewes had abnormal haemorrhagic and putrid vaginal discharges. Embryos were recovered by laparoscopy 5 or 6 days after intrauterine insemination from 13 of the ewes (including 7 that had had abnormal vaginal discharges). Average recovery rate of ova from the 7 'abnormal' ewes was 57% compared to 82% for the 6 'normal' ewes (where recovery rate was the number of embryos retrieved compared to the number of corpora lutea counted during laparoscopy). Of the ova recovered from the 'abnormal' ewes 39% were unfertilized compared with 13% from 'normal' ewes. Many of the fertilized ova from the 'abnormal' ewes were retarded in their development. Ater transfer 75% of the recipient ewes receiving embryos from 'abnormal' ewes returned to the ram compared to 23% receiving embryos from 'normal' ewes. It may be that trauma to the vaginal mucosa or the introduction of infection when the sponges were inserted resulted in the abnormal discharges.
