First investigations on the abundance of epigeal arthropods, cereal aphids and stenophagous aphid predators in herbicide-free border strips of winter wheat fields in Hesse

As part of the 'Field Border Strips Programme' of the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Nature Conservation faunal investigations were conducted in several winter wheat field borders in summer 1987. The abundance of predacious carabids, staphylinids, spiders, forficulids and formicids was generally higher whereas the number of cereal aphids was lower in untreated than in herbicide treated border strips. Coccinellid eggs and larvae as well as syrphid larvae were found more numerous in border strips treated with herbicides, where aphid infestation was heavier. Syrphid oviposition was about the same in both border strips treated and untreated with herbicides
