Concept of the IOBC-working group 'Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms' for testing the side effects of pesticides on beneficials

Methods to test the side effects of pesticides on beneficial organisms recommended by the Working Group 'Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms' of the Internationl Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) was described and discussed. This Working Group was established in 1974 and coordinate activities in 13 countries at the present time. A sequential procedure using different standard laboratory, semi-field and field test methods is recommended. Natural enemies relevant to the crops on which the particular pesticide is to be used are chosen for the experiments. The side effects of 84 pesticides on 8 to 19 beneficial organisms (parasites, predatory insects, predatory mites, entomopathogenic fungus) have been tested within joint pesticide testing programmes by the Working Group. Results showed that 26 of these pesticides that are registered for use in the Federal Republic of Germany were less harmful to relevant beneficial organisms and can be recommended for use in integrated control programmes
