Respiration of the two spotted spider mite as affected by leaf nitrogen

Spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) were reared individually on leaf discs of apple trees fertilized with three different N levels. Leaf N content, absolute and relative (metabolic) respiration rates as well as dry weight of female mites were determined. Mean absolute and relative (per mug body dry weight) respiration rates increased by ca 35 per cent (absolute rate) and 25 per cent (relative rate), respectively at high leaf N. Both respiration rates as well as spider mite dry weight were correlated with N content of the leaves. In a range of 1.8 to 3.0 per cent leaf N, absolute and relative respiration increased by 68 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively. The energy used for respiration per hour averaged 0.8-1.0 per cent of the energy of the female biomass
