By means of suitable tests it could be demonstrated, that the addition of (-)-carvone, the main constituent of the essential oil of Chrysanthemum balsamita, to pyrethrines enhanced their insecticidal activity against the rose grain aphid, Metopholophium dirhodum. A blend of 1 : 850, which is the ratio of pyrethrine 1: carvone in the essential oil, increased the pyrethrine toxicity 7-11 times. Comparing the dose-effect values of the single components at the EC50-level revealed a superadditive and thus synergistic effect. No significant dependence of the reduction of insect infestation on the ratio of pyrethrines: carvone in the range from 1 : 50 to 1 :10(4) was observed
