Influence of soil moisture on the mortality, fecundity and diapause of the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff.)

The mortality of Thaumetopoea pityocampa during the pupal stage was generally very high (60-96 per cent) and was greatly influenced by the soil moisture. The prolenged pupal diapause lasted for one additional year during of which the increased soil moisture resulted in the decrease of the number of the emerged moths. The number of eggs per female moth was not influenced by the soil moisture. The practical aspects of the above factors were also discussed
