In agar diffusion tests, 24 plant extracts out of 131 samples tested, displayed inhibitory activity against Erwinia amylovora, the causative agent of fire blight. The inhibitory potential of three extracts of Juglans nigra L., Berberis vulgaris L., and Rhus typhina L. applied as aqueous solutions at concentrations of 5, 2, and 1.25 per cent was even comparable to that of streptomycin (17 ppm). Similarly, extracts of Mahonia aquifolium were inhibitive at a minimum concentration of 5 per cent, yet the inhibition zones exerted were of reduced size. Extracts of J. nigra, M. aquifolium, and R. typhina proved to be equally active for at least 11 days when kept at 10 degrees or 20 degrees C, whereas the inhibitory action of B. vulgaris-extracts was distinctly reduced after 8 days
