Influence of the stress factor "hunger" on susceptibility of syrphid larvae to pesticides

Second and third instar larvae of the hover fly Episyrphus balteatus were kept on surfaces treated with either Afugan, Antracol, Pirimor, Sumicidin, or a JHA and were fed ad libitum or with a restricted number of aphids. Hunger enhanced the susceptibility of larvae to Pirimor, Sumicidin, and the JHA compared to larvae kept on treated surfaces but fed ad libitum. Under the influence of the three insecticides hungry larvae were affected in their development, weight, the resulting pupal and imaginal weight as well as in mortality. The fungicide Afugan killed all larvae irrespectively the way they were fed even in concentrations of 0.0005 per cent whereas the fungicide Antracol did not harm the larvae up to a concentration of 0.5 per cent
