Wheat fusarioses - influence of infection date, tissue injury and aphids on leaf and ear attack

Two distinct developmental stages of the wheat plant are most susceptible for ear infection by Fusarium culmorum: the period of opening the flag leaf sheath and flowering (anthers fully developed or even degenerating). Leaf blade and leaf sheath infection - e.g. by Gerlachia nivalis - does not so much depend on any certain plant stage. Artificial inoculation of the intact upper leaves with spore suspensions did not lead to leaf attack by the pathogens. However, mechanical injury or aphid attack led to a significant increase in the number of leaf lesions. Previous injury by other fungi (e.g. Erysiphe graminis, Septoria nodorum) or by air pollutants such as ozone promoted leaf attack by G. nivalis - and probably F. culmorum - as well. During heading, the flag leaf sheath is open, thus favouring fungal infection of the young ear by rain water or dew oozing in. Ear attack was most severe by F. culmorum, then followed by F. graminearum and finally G. nivalis. Severe artificial ear infection by F. culmorum was overcome by the new curative fungicide Folicur
