Attractiveness of the terpene alpha-pinene to the large pine shoot beetle, Blastophagus piniperda (L.) (Col., Scolytidae)

The large pine shoot beetle, Blastophagus piniperda (L.) was monitored in pine woods of southern Bohemia using a mixture of (+)-alpha-pinene (99 per cent pure) and ethanol (96 per cent pure). The terpene (+)-alpha-pinene mixed with ethanol in various proportions was placed inside four-walled barriers: the method was compared with the method of trap trees. The average of 272 adult B. piniperda per 1 four-walled barrier were caught in 1985, 254 in 1986 and 221 in 1987, respectively. The average of 249 entrance holes per trap tree were recorded, representing approximately 462 adults. The mixture of (+)-alpha-pinene and ethanol at 1:7 seems to be the most effective: the average of 53.5 per cent of all adult beetles caught in the barriers were lured by it
