The waste deposit at Hamburg-Georgswerder consists of approximately 14 Million m3 of domestic refuse, soil, construction rubble and at least of 200.000 m3 extraordinary waste in liquid and solid state. Iniciated by the detection of the seveso-dioxin, 2, 3, 7, 8-TCDD in the leachate in 1986 one of the worlds largest rehabilitation programs for a waste deposit started. The passed methods of discharging wastes and their risks and consequences to environment are explained. The development and scientific work, the security aspects, the organization, public relations and the financial background are described.
