Effect of nitrogen fertilization and plant spacing on seed yield of sesamie (Sesamum indicum, L.) [Egypt]

Two field experiments were carried out at the Agric. Exp. and Res. Center Fac. of Agric., Cairo Univ., Giza, Egypt during 1984 and 1985 seasons, to study the response of two sesame mutants(M-6 and M-48) and one local variety "Giza 25" to plant spacing (5, 10 and 15 cm) with rows of 50 cm apart and N-levels (47.6, 95. 2 and 142.9 kg N/ ha) in the first season and 71.4, 107.1 and 142.9 kg N/ ha in the second one. The data obtained show that plant height, number of branches/ plant and seed yield increased with increasing nitrogen level. Highest seed yield/ ha was 1231 kg with 95.2 kg N/ ha in the first season and 1737 kg with 107.1 kg N/ ha in the second one. Mutant 48 yielded highest seed yields of 1446 and 2009 kg/ ha in 1984 and 1985 seasons, respectively as compared either the mutant 6 or Giza 25 Cultivar. Close plant spacing (5 cm between hills) produced the highest seed yield/ ha. However, medium and wide plant spacing (10 and 15 cm between hills) showed highest number of branches, number of capsules and seed weight per plant. Under the conditions of this experiment, sowing mutant 48 at 50x5 cm plant spacing and application of 95.2 to 107.1 kg N/ ha could maximize sesame seed yield.
