The effect of water supply on growth and yield of corn (Zea mays L.) plants [Egypt]

The present investigation aimed mainly to study some growth aspects as well as yield of corn plants affected by rewatering, after exposure to drought conditions at certain developmental stages. The following results were obtained. Whether subjected to drought conditions constantly or at any of specific developmental stages, the corn plants showed lower values for plant height, dry weight of either stems or leaves (per plant) as well as for grain yield (per plant), compared with plants grown under normal irrigation conditions. On removal of water stress after the appearance of 10th leaf, the rate of increase in plant height per day way higher during the early 10 days just following the change in water regime. Dry weight determinations showed that the relative growth rate of either stem or leaves just after showed that the relative growth rate of either stem or leaves just after shifting the low soil moisture level into a normal one at the appearance of 10th leaf exceeded that indicated at the same time for the case of either normally-irrigated plants or those grown under uninterrupted drought conditions. The developmental stage at which water stress occurs can exert important influence on the yield of corn.
