Effect of fumigants and Agrobacterium radiobacter strain 84 in controlling crown gall of apple seedlings

Field trials at Summerland and Creston in 1984 and 1985 on loam soils naturally infested with Agrobacterium tumefaciens showed that A. radiobacter strain 84 (K-84) did not control crown gall on Antonovka apple seedlings when applied as a root-dip. K-84 controlled crown gall at Sidney on sandy loam soil in 1984 and 1985, but failed in 1986. At Creston, higher than standard concentrations of K-84 did not control crown gall of seedlings, whether the seedlings were grown in unsterilized soil (1986) or in sterile soil (1987) before transplanting them into A. tumefaciens naturally infested soil. In a field trial in 1986 at Summerland, root-dip treatment with K-84 alone or in combination with broadcast treatments of metam-sodium or formalin failed to control crown gall on Antonovka seedlings. However, crown gall infection was significantly reduced with metam-sodium or K-84 treatment alone when seedlings were raised in sterile soil before transplanting in naturally infested soil at Summerland in 1987
