Field trials of (R)Folicur for controlling black Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella fijiensis) in banana plantations on the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica

Since 1984 Folicur has been tested on bananas in several trials in Costa Rica. The dominant pathogen was the fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensis. In these trials Folicur proved to be extremely effective in controlling this disease. Applied in an oil-in-water emulsion (5 litres of oil per hectare) at a dose rate of just 75 g active ingredient per hectare, Folicur was more effective than the standard products both in small-plot and large-plot trials. The effectiveness of Folicur was also evident from the improvements in the yield data. Trials in which different formulations of Folicur were tested or different amounts of oil were used for the application did not reveal any significant differences as regards effectiveness. Folicur is a new, highly effective fungicide which can be integrated into the routine programme of spraying with various types of chemical agent for controlling black Sigatoka disease of bananas
