This paper describes some recent improvements in lysimeter sampling techniques which remove the possibility of edge-flow and ensure that natural soil hydraulic properties are retained; examines the leaching pattern of surface applied nitrate under intermittent and continuous simulated rainfall and attempts to explain the mechanisms operating in each situation; and tests the accuracy of an empirically based multi-compartment simulation model for predicting nitrate leaching
