Seabirds encompass two environments and maybe used as valuable indicators of both. In New Zealand they form over 30% of the indigenous avifauna providing unparalleled opportunities to use seabirds as environmental indicators of the health and wealth of the surrounding seas. However, most seabird monitoring in New Zealand has concerned itself with specific issues of conservation when it is believed that the species under study has declined or is threatened, usually as a result of landbased factors. A better understanding of the relationship of seabirds with their primary habitat will provide us not only with a better understanding of seabird ecology and distribution but also permit us to more effectively use seabirds in marine ecosystem modelling.
