Vegetation monitoring, with special reference to the subantarctic islands of New Zealand

Results of monitoring vegetation responses to animals in the Subantarctic Islands show parallels with Fiordland, New Zealand, data. Removal of grazing pressure leads to rapid regeneration of palatable, large herbs and grasses on fertile soils. There is more gradual (intrinsic) change on stressful (infertile, cold or exposed) sites and on those (with woody or unpalatable plants) that were little modified by past browsing. These results have influenced management policy towards greater control of feral animals, despite possible conflicts with other goals of maximising local species diversity or albatross nesting habits
