Young cacao pod is very susceptible to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides infection. On pod surface, the germinated conidia form tubes and appressoria. Penetration occurs through plant cuticle and not through stomata. The optimal temperature for germination, infection and sporulation is 29-30 deg C. Under this condition the life cycle of C. gloeosporioides is relatively short i.e. 6 days. The germination of conidia on PDA medium forms only one germ tube whereas the appressoria is rarely found. At 35 deg C, the germinated conidia form two germ tubes.
