Effect of pruning ages and ways of plucking on root starch content and production of seedling tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze)

To observe the effect of pruning ages and ways of plucking on their root starch content and production of tea, an experiment has been conducted at Gambung experimental Garden, Research Institute for tea and Cinchona, Ciwidey-Bandung, of 1300 m above sea level, on Andosol. The experiment was carried out from November 1983 up to March 1984, on seedling tea area. The research was arranged in Split Plot Design using Randomized Block Design. The main plot was pruning ages of 1 year, 2 years, 3 years and 4 years, while the sub plot was fine plucking, medium plucking and coarse plucking. The older the pruning age of tea, the higher the starch content was. Maximum starch content of 15.30 percent was reached at 3 years pruning age, and at pruning age of 4 years decreased into 13.58 percent. The highest production was reached by 3 year pruning age. Fine plucking increased the highest starch content i.e. 3.10 percent, followed respectively by medium plucking of 1.70 percent, and coarse plucking as much as 1.30 percent. For seedling tea like Gambung Experimental Garden, 4 year pruning cycle and medium plucking are recommended.
