An important precondition for the application of a model is its validation. So the main results of the evaluation of the simulation model PESTSIM-MAC concerning the population dynamics of Macrosiphum (Sitobion) avenae (F.) are discussed. Extensive simulation studies in connection with the analysis of key processes were made to improve the model and to give evidence of the validity. To a large extent the success of the modelling process depends on the quality and quantity of data used. Unfortunately at present there is no sufficient method to count the exact number of aphidophagous insects (especially Coccinellidae) in relation to a defined area. A catalogue of case studies is presented for field-related decicions on control of aphids at the end of the flowering period of winter wheat (DC69)
