Differences between plants and stems in the stands of spring wheat

Two spring wheat varieties of different agroecological types (Rena - CSFR, Broom - England), sown at different densities (1200, 600, 300, 100 and 5 grains per 1 m2) in an exact hexagonal spacing in 1985, were evaluated for the differences in changes in the variability in plant population and in the metapopulation of stems. The exact determination of the growth and development of the stems, compared with the plants, reduces the applicability of the regularities of the population biology of plants. Self regulation took place within a wider range of plant number and within a narrower range of the number of stems per 1 m2. The responses of the plants to the agroecological conditions of the site, manifesting themselves in changes in relationships within the plants, changed the variability of stems. The degree of stem uniformity on each plant modified the form of their weight frequency distribution. The skewness of distribution can be used to evaluate the varietal differences in the response to environment, i.e. adaptation to the given conditions.
