[Virus diseases in Malaysian vegetables]

Vegetables like chilli, tomato, brinjal, long bean, winged bean, cucumber, lettuce and spinach are reported to be infected by viruses. Chilli is reported to be infected by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), chilli veinal mottle virus (CVMV), tobacco mosaic virus ( TMV) and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV); tomato by CMV, TMV, tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) and TSWV; brinjal by CMV; long bean by blackeye cowpea mosaic virus (BICMV) and long bean mosaic virus (LBMV); winged bean by bean common mosaic virus (BCMV); cucumber by CMV and zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV); lettuce by lettuce mosaic virus (LMV); and spinach by TSWV. Each symptom is described. Aphids is an efficient vector transmitting most of the viruses listed while thrips transmit only TSWV. General control methods are discussed.
