The ability of six species of ectomycorrhizal fungi to form mycorrhiza on plantlets of Sitka spruce derived from somatic embryos was investigated. Inoculations were performed on plantlets of three developmental stages, the youngest in an in vitro system and the older two in ex vitrum systems. Mycorrhizal synthesis was achieved only on the oldest plantlets during the third week after inoculation. The rate and development of mycorrhizal formation varied according to the fungal species, Thelephora terrestris reaching the highest infection level of 92% of the total number of root tips, and Lactarius rufus failing to form any mycorrhizae. Root and shoot dry weights corresponded to the infection levels achieved by the respective fungi.
