The role of leaf and root morphology, stomatal behaviour, canopy architecture, turgor maintenance, photosynthesis and carbon allocation on growth and productivity of various genotypes of Populus trichocarpa, P. deltoides and their hybrids have been studies for six years. Hybrid vigor or heterosis is strongly expressed in the F1 hybrids. Key morphological and physiological factors affecting this superior growth and productivity have been identified
