Root growth dynamics of barley and wheat in field trials after CCC application

Field trials to study the effects of chlormequat chloride (CCC), applied in 3-4 doses, on barley and wheat were carried out on sandy loam (1986) and clay soils (1987) near Uppsala (59 deg 52 min N, 17 deg 43 min E). Root biomass, root length, number of main roots, number of tillers, stem length and grain yield were determined. Roots were sampled 3-4 times during the growing season using ingrowth cores in mesh bags. CCC treatment caused a significant decrease in the stem length of wheat, but not of barley. Number of secondary shoots (tillers) and grain yield were not affected. On clay soil, in 1987, the root biomass of wheat in CCC-treated plants was significantly higher than that of controls on two sampling occasions but no corresponding differences were found in barley. On sandy loam, in 1986, the treaments had no apparent effects on root biomass. The effects of CCC treatment on root length were similar and there was a strong correlation between mass and length. This suggests that CCC did not shorten the roots. The number of main roots was not significantly affected by the treatments. The results indicate that under field conditions CCC has only minor effects on plant characteristics other than stem length
