Continuous measurements of moisture content and automation of drying process in grain driers

Continuous measurements of grain moisture content at the spots of grain delivery and discharge are necessary to reach a better quality of the control of drying processes. This is the reason why several moisture meters were tested. A microwave MFG-G moisture meter of Bauakademie Berlin gave good results but it has two disadvantages: it is not an apt instrument to be fixed near the drier and its price is high. The capacity MMRV-1 moisture meter did not provide good results of grain moisture measurements, either A KVO-50 moisture meter based on a capacity principle did not give the results of required reproducibillity; but it could be used in practice on condition that it is often re-calibrated. Tests of the COMPU-DRY system used for the control of constant moisture content of discharged grain did not prove high manufacturer's parameters, especially with respect to the reliability at great jumps in the moisture content of delivered grain. But its functions are acceptable in normal operating conditions. A complex system of the automated control of driers has been developed in collaboration with the Research Institute of Agricultural Engineering. Its functions were good as to the control of the temperature regime of drying process, and control of grain flow; the control of the moisture content of discharged grain was checked only as to its function due to the short season and it will require operational debugging in the next season
