The influence of undersowing dates (24th September, 2nd November, 20th March) of lucerne sown into winter rye has been studied in field experiments conducted without a nurse crop. The paper evaluates dry matter yields in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years. The average 1st year yields were lower without the nurse crop in all 3 sowing terms when compared to those with lucerne undersown into rye. The yields of rye with lucerne were unaffected by the sowing date; those without nurse crops were influenced by atmospheric conditions. In the 2nd year, no differences due to the stand establishment method were observed. The interaction between the stand establishment and the production year was significant. In the third year only the sowing term and the year significantly influenced the highest yields obtained in the early spring sowing.
