Sugarcane smut development models. 1. Annual curves of disease progress

The evalution of sugarcane smut was quantified for commercial cultivars 'NA56-79', 'SP71-799', SP71-1406', 'SP71-6163', 'SP70-1143. The number of whips present in inoculated and non-inoculated cultivars was determined at regular time intervals for five consecutive years and under natural epidemic conditions. Disease progress as a function of time was evaluated in annual curves obtained with the cumulative values of whips, where days were utilized as the time unit. Except for cv. 'SP70-1143', the annual curves of smut progress showed the presence of two disease incidence plateaus charaterizing two phases of the curve. The mathematical analysis applied to the data obtained in the first phase of the curve showed a similar behavior for all cultivars, with the logistic model presenting good adjustment to the disease evolution in the plant-cane stage and the monomolecular model in the subsequent ratoons.
