Tannia (cocoyam; Xanthosoma sagittifolium) is important to Dominica (West Indies) both in terms of food security and as a foreign exchange earner. To assist in the mass production of planting material, the Caribbean Agricutural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) has recently developed a plant biotechnology (tissues culture) laboratory there. However tannia rapid multiplication techniques have proven much more difficult when compared with other root crops such as yam (Dioscorea spp.), cassava (Manihot esculents) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). The paper also highlights the inherent difficulties in tannia biotechnology and also suggests a module for its rapid multiplication.
