The use of drip irrigation for on-surface and subsurface application of wastewater

Drip irrigation with wastewater has been common practise for many years in Israel. In a field experiment with sweet corn (Zea mays L. conv. Saccharata) the implementation of this technique for subsurface application was investigated in the Negev desert. The used filtration technique was conventional and proved to be sufficient. No significant yield differences to on-surface drip irrigation were observed. The 0,96 m lateral spacing yielded 14 % higher than the 1,92 m spacing (double row spacing). This effect, however, can largely be attributed to different in temporary local soil salinity: In the wide lateral spacing, a significant accumulation of salt was observed between the laterals. Higher leaching demand is thus required, particularly when the subsurface drip system is to be used over several seasons.
