Evaluation and identification of various storage techniques to prolong the viability of corn seeds

Results of the study indicated that charcoal-treated seeds having low moisture content (10.0%, w.b.) prior to storage in can had the highest percentage germination of 70.50 after the 12th month. However, this is not statistically higher than those seeds treated with naphthalene balls held in the same container and moisture level, which had 68.25% germination. Consequently, seeds taken from the above lots grew into vigorous seedlings. In contrast, the use of cooking oil for treatment drastically shortened the storage life of corn seeds, possibly, due to the disruption of the biochemical processes in seeds. A sound storage technique therefore is essential to lengthen the longevity of corn seeds. This involves proper drying, appropriate packaging, and seed conditioning of the seed lot.
