Augmentation of beneficial arthropods by sown weed strips in agricultural areas

Field and laboratory investigations have shown that the attractivity of 80 weed species differs considerably for several groups of beneficial arthropods. The reasons herefore are not clear. This effect, however, enables us to augment the beneficial arthropods of a field edge by sowing weeds which are especially attractive for syrphids, chrysopids, coccinellids or other groups. This reduces the number of pest insects in the surroundings of the edge. By composing several vegetation elements to weed strips (width 1,5 m) which penetrate the agricultural area at regular distances of 24 m, a complex habitat management system is achieved. This yields a permanent increase of the ecological value of intensively used agricultures
