The experiments showed the correlation between increasing ascochyta infection of pods and an increasing infection of seed. Even at only small number of hot spots on a pod (assessment value 2) more than 10 % of seed was found infected. An increase in pod infection from assessment value 3 (up to 10 small hot spots) to 5 (more than 10 small hot spots) is evaluated as very critical for infection of seed, rises by more than 2.5 times. Seed from pods which did not display a visible infection (assessment value 1) were infected with Ascochyta fabae too which is very interesting. Whether systemic infection occurs can be elucidated by specific epidemiological investigations only. According to other references this has not been successful until now. The present one-year experiments are a first step for the derivation of the value for seed health by the intensity of pod infection
