The northern limit to the distribution of the red meranti group of the genus Shorea was investigated by mapping the collecting and exact localities of the following species : Shorea curtissi, Shorea leprosula, Shorea macroptera, Shorea parvifolia and Shorea pauciflora. The red merantis are characteristic of the lowland tropical rain forest of Malaysia, but are absent from the semi evergreen rain forest of Thailand. There was no evidence to refuse the Kangar to Pattani line as the site of the Kra ecotone between these forest types, from the limited data obtained. The possible factors determining the geographic position of the Kra ecotone are discussed. Rainfall variability is put forward as the most likely cause.
