During a recent outbreak of surra involving cattle, buffalo, and horses in Kabupaten Bangkalan, Madura, a parasitological and serological survey was carried out to determine the prevalence of Trypanosoma evansi in the region. Blood samples were collected from 130 cattles and 147 buffaloes in 6 villages, whole blood was examined for trypanosomes by microhaematocrit (MHT) and sera were subjected to an ELISA to detect the presence of antibodies to T. evansi. T. evansi was detected by MHT in 50 pct. of the buffaloes examined and 13 pct. of the cattles. Antibodies to T. evansi were detected in 47 pct. of buffaloes and 30 pct. of cattles. In a number of parasitologically positive animals the antibodies were not detected which is an indication of recent infections. In the second part of the study, a drug test was carried out using white mice to determine the efficacy of the two trypanosomal drugs applied in Madura. Suramin at the dose rate of 10 mg/kg was effective and at 5 mg/kg was partially effective. Isometamidium at dose rates of 3 and 2 mg/kg was found to be ineffective.
