By coupling of plant specific dose response relationships with kinetic models for description of the fate of herbicides in soil and weed emergence, one can obtain time course of the herbicide activity. The amount of herbicides required to control a given weed in a given soil is generally obtained by characteristic soil parameters, e.g., content of organic matter. In the case of microbial degradation, the amount of herbicide depends on sorption capacity of soil, metabolic activity of microorganisms and soil history. Functions are presented for description of the dependence of sorption intensity of herbicides and activity of degrading microorganisms on environmental factors. In the case of herbicide degradation by metabolism, microorganisms can adapt to the organic compound during the previous exposure, which results in accelerated herbicide degradation of the subsequent application. If weed emergence occurs over a long period of time, a dynamic point of view is required for obtaining the optimal application dose of herbicide
