Phenotypic variability of yield and fruit characteristics of peach palm and arecanut

The peach palm or pejibaya, ((Bactris gasipaes)) HBK, can probably provide the most balanced of all tropical foods. Its fruits contain protein, fat, carbohydrate, minerals and vitamins and its cabbage is edible. It was introduced into Malaysia in the early sixties. The palm has great potential in diversifying plantation crops as well as integrated agriculture. Ripe fruits of the palm were harvested from groves in Serdang and Jerangau. The number of fruits/bunch, fruit weight, fruit size were determined and preliminary chemical analysis of the fruits was done. The arecanut industry has been on a declining trend for many years. Existing arecanut or betel palm ((Areca catechu L.)) groves are mostly found in the Pontian district, Johore. Ripe fruits of arecanut were harvested from a non-random sample of arecanut trees in various states. The number of fruits/bunch, fruit weight, and fruit size were determined. The yield and fruit characteristics of peach palm and arecanut showed phenotypic variability and thus offer scope for crop improvement. Seedlings of both types of palms have been planted in family rows to assess yield and other traits in these segregated populations. Appparently, arecanut is a neglected crop in Malaysia and steps need to be taken to conserve its genetic diversity.
