Wood preservatives for the wound treatment of trees?

Dujesiefken, D. | Liese, W.
For the treatment of larger wounds and cavities in trees the use of wood preservatives is required according to the ZTV-Baumpflege (Tree Care Regulations). In order to evaluate the efficiency of such treatments a solvent-based preservative was applied on fresh wounds of eleven beech trees and the reactions observed during four years. The preservative did not protect the wound surface sufficiently against fungal attack. Moreover, the toxic components damaged the living cells beneath so that the compartmentalization as a protective response was initiated only further away leading to a larger discolored column. According to the results and also considering the present Plant Health Regulations no wood preservative should be applied for the wound treatment of trees
